Whether you can actually take part depends on a number of medical criteria we check during a screening visit. The next step commits you to nothing: click below and your own email program opens with a message already filled in with the questions we need. Add whatever you want to share and send it.
You are probably not eligible
Sorry to have to say so. The criteria are strict because we are specifically studying what 6-BT does in the first months after diagnosis. Not sure whether your situation might still fit? Email us — we are happy to think along.

The criteria
When can you take part?
You are eligible if
- You are aged 18 to 30 inclusive
- You received a formal type 1 diabetes diagnosis in the past 6 months
- You still produce measurable amounts of your own insulin (we test this at screening)
- You are willing to take daily capsules for 12 months
- You are able to travel to AmsterdamUMC for a screening plus six visits
You are not eligible if
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have another autoimmune condition treated with immunosuppressive medication
- You have used antibiotics in the past 3 months
- You are taking part in another clinical drug trial

What a visit looks like
Two to four hours per visit
Every follow-up visit runs the same way, so you always know what to expect. Part of it you prepare at home, the rest happens at the Clinical Trial Unit.
Preparation at home
- Wear your sensorYou wear your own glucose sensor for the two weeks before the visit.
- Food diaryThree days of noting down what you eat and drink.
- Collect a stool sampleAt home, with a kit we give you. For the gut analysis.
During the visit
- Come fastingNothing to eat from midnight. Water is fine.
- Short conversationHow are you doing, any symptoms or changes?
- CannulaOne needle stick, then every sample without a new one.
- Meal testYou drink a standardised drink; we then measure at fixed intervals how much insulin you still produce yourself.
- Blood samplesFor immune measurements, glucose values and the safety check.
- Two urine collectionsAt two fixed moments during the visit.
- Short questionnairesAbout how you are doing and how the capsules are going.
- Capsules to take homeEnough to last until the next visit.
- Your own resultsYou get these back throughout the study, so you are monitored more closely than usual.
Practical: travel costs are reimbursed in full and you receive an expense allowance of € 350 for taking part. Visits are scheduled around your studies or work wherever possible.
Your lab results come back to you. During the study you are therefore checked more often and more thoroughly than usual, which sometimes means fewer blood draws for your own six-monthly or annual check-up.
