About us
The research group behind BREBAD
The study is run by a small team at AmsterdamUMC, in collaboration with Diabeter. You deal with the same people throughout — no rotating faces.

Prof. Max Nieuwdorp
Internist-endocrinologist specialising in vascular medicine, and head of the department of vascular medicine at AmsterdamUMC. He has spent years studying how gut bacteria influence metabolism and the immune system, and how that can be used to slow diseases such as type 1 diabetes. He holds overall responsibility for the BREBAD study.

Dr Elena Rampanelli
Immunologist at AmsterdamUMC. She studies how signalling molecules from the gut microbiome steer the immune response against beta cells. She leads the immunological part of the study and the laboratory work that preceded it.

Jordi Dengerink
MD-PhD candidate. He runs the study day to day: he handles screening, sees you at every visit, and is the person who emails or calls you. All questions about taking part reach him.
Independent advice
Someone who is not involved in the study
Every medical research study in the Netherlands has an independent physician: someone who knows the study but has no role in it, and therefore no stake in your decision. For BREBAD that is Dr Cohn.
You can approach him for a second opinion about taking part, or if there is something you would rather not discuss with the research team. His contact details are in the participant information you receive.
